Welcome to the PHY Database Blog

The PHY Database Blog features occasional posts about the history of the Paul H. Young Company, with a focus on the legacy and accomplishments of bamboo rod maker Paul H. Young of Detroit, Michigan. The photo below shows Paul H. Young’s favorite personal fly rod (above), a “Parabolic 15” which he built for himself in 1951 and modified in 1957, and Martha Marie Young’s “Perfectionist” (below), which her husband made for her as a surprise gift just before the opening of the 1955 Michigan trout fishing season. The two rods are resting on the PHY shop ledger. Other items include a PHY Transparent Novelty Box and Paul H. Young’s personal Hardy St. George 3-inch trout reel. The box of dry flies was tied by PHY around 1937 for Dr. Walter Snyder of Toledo, Ohio. A handwritten letter from Paul Young to Dr. Snyder is seen in the lower right portion of the photo.
